Box Score PHILADELPHIA- Following a hard-fought five-set loss at Dominican on Friday night, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (2-5) was back in action quickly on Saturday on the road against CACC foe Chestnut Hill (1-0). West Chester battled throughout the afternoon, but Chestnut Hill prevailed by a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-23) final to open its season with a victory over the visiting Golden Rams.
Abiah Lane (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) led West Chester in kills with nine as the Golden Rams finished the match, hitting just .062 for the match.
Megan St. Jean (Eaton, Co./Eaton) posted a team-high 15 assists and registered a pair of kills and eight digs.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the team in both digs and aces, finishing with nine and two, respectively.
West Chester fell behind early in the first set, trailing 16-10 at the midway point before eventually dropping the opener by a 25-13 final as the Griffins closed the set on a 7-1 run.
In the second set, West Chester fell behind early once again, trailing 14-7 early before going on a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to 18-14. Trailing by four was as close as West Chester could get in this set as the Griffins closed it out on a 7-2 run to claim it by a 25-16 final and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Eager to avoid a three-set defeat at the hands of Chestnut Hill in the Griffins season opener, West Chester battled throughout the third set, including erasing an 18-13 deficit late in the set to tie things up at 22-22.
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) came through with an all-important kill that gave West Chester late life with a 23-22 lead and forced a Chestnut Hill timeout. Chestnut Hill tied things up at 23-all out of the timeout after a Rachel Mace kill, which forced head coach
Kassie Bellaver to burn a timeout of her own. Following West Chester's timeout, Chestnut Hill took a 24-23 lead with an ace before winning the set by a 25-23 margin with an Erika Dubosky kill, giving the Griffins the match by a 3-0 final.
Dubosky led Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 11 kills on 26 swings and six digs. As a team, Chestnut Hill hit a solid .248, including an impressive .355 in the third set, while also finishing with 10 aces and five blocks in the victory. Pamela Uceta led Chestnut Hill in aces with three, while Mia Caporellie chipped in a pair along with 27 assists and 11 digs. Mace tied for the team leads in digs with Alexandra Crespin as the two registered 12 each to slow the Golden Ram offense on Saturday afternoon.
