WEST CHESTER, PA - Third-ranked East Stroudsburg scored a goal in the ninth minute and made that single tally hold up in a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked West Chester in a non-league field hockey contest Friday night at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (4-2) saw its four-game win streak come to an end while East Stroudsburg (5-1) extended its win streak to four straight.
Golden Rams' graduate student,
Paige Wolfe (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) nearly tied the game late in the fourth quarter when her reverse chip sailed just high over the crossbar. Moments later on a penalty corner,
Ella Shockley (Delmar, Del./Delmar) let go on a slapshot that just missed wide of the left post. Those were the two best opportunities for the hosts to draw even. West Chester pressed for the majority of the fourth quarter, but never could get the equalizer.
East Stroudsburg had a goal disallowed with 1:20 left in the third quarter when the referees got together and determined that the shot was struck with the back-side of the stick.
West Chester goalkeeper,
Ryan Curley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made six saves in the loss while her counterpart, Sydney Pope, made nine stops earning her first win of the season. The home team held a 17-9 edge in shots while also showing a 13-5 advantage in corners. West Chester just could not capitalize on any of its corner opportunities.
The Golden Rams finish its four-game homestand on Sunday against IUP. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field.
