No. 6 West Chester Rides Strong Second Half to 4-1 Win Over IUP

WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester used three goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock at the break and roll to a 4-1 victory over visiting Indiana (Pa.) on a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

West Chester (5-2) picked up a win in its final game of its latest four-game homestand to finish the span at 3-1. IUP (1-5) dropped its second straight contest in as many days, after falling to Pace University on Saturday.

The visitors opened up the scoring in the eighth minute of the contest when Lilly Fringer dribbled along the baseline and flicked a shot up into the air that landed in front of the cage and spun over the goal line.

Veerle Hersman (Lisse, The Netherlands) tied things up when she was inserted to take a penalty stroke awarded to the home team in the second quarter. That's how things stood til the second half.

West Chester's Paige Wolfe (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) put the Golden Rams in the lead for good in the 42nd minute when she took a pass from Gianna Funari (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) in the middle of the circle, spun and rocketed a slapshot past IUP goalkeeper Brooke Eberly.

Ten minutes later, Caitlynn Szarko (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), doubled the lead with an unassisted tally to give the Golden Rams some breathing room. Ella Shockley (Delmar, Del./Delmar) ripped a shot past Eberly in the 57th minute off a penalty corner to close out the scoring.

Ryan Curley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made six saves in the cage for West Chester to improve to 5-2 overall on the year.

West Chester travels to Mansfield University on Wednesday for a non-league tilt against the Mountaineers. That game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
