Women's Basketball Clipped by Lock Haven 83-73 in PSAC East Home Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Anna McTamney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a career-high 33 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the field and a 16-for-17 effort at the line but it was not enough to lead the West Chester University women's basketball team (5-9, 2-5) to an upset victory over Lock Haven (9-4, 4-3) on Monday evening. In a game that featured 20 ties and eight lead changes, West Chester remained within striking distance throughout the night, but five Lock Haven players in double figures were too much to overcome in an 83-73 setback.

Michelle Kozicki (Wilmington, Del./Padua) also scored 14 points and corralled six rebounds, while Bella Mazur (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) added 13 for her fifth double-digit scoring effort in six games in the loss.

McTamney also led West Chester in rebounding with eight, while Erin Daley (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) led the team in assists with a game-high five.

The first was tight throughout, featuring seven ties and three lead changes. Neither team built a lead larger than four points in the period, and West Chester carried a slim 21-19 lead into the second. McTamney scored a game-high 11 first-quarter points, including eight at the free-throw line, and West Chester was a perfect 10-for-10 at the stripe in the first 20 minutes.

West Chester kept the game close in the second half, as the period saw nine more ties and five more lead changes, increasing the totals to 16 and 8 on the night. McTamney scored 18 first-half points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field and an 11-for-12 effort at the free-throw line. West Chester trailed by just four at the half, as Lock Haven held a narrow 43-39 lead.

Madeline Evans led Lock Haven in scoring in the first half with 11 points and seven rebounds.

West Chester shot 42.3 % (11-of-26) from the field in the first half, including a 20.0 % (1-of-5) effort from three-point range, while also 16-for-18 (88.9 %) at the line.

Lock Haven had a similar first half as the Bald Eagles shot 45.5 % (15-of-33) from the field, including 2-of-10 from three-point range, while also shooting 91.7 % (11-of-12) at the free throw line.

Lock Haven's bench was a difference maker in the first half as the Bald Eagles' second unit accounted for 16 first-half points, led by 11 by Alana Robinson, while helping to hold the Golden Ram's second unit to just two.

The second half remained tight out of the gates as Lock Haven held a slim 49-45 lead with under five minutes to play in the third quarter. Lock Haven stretched its lead to five midway through the frame, but West Chester outscored its guests 10-6 down the stretch of the third quarter to trail by just one (56-55) heading into the fourth.

The fourth remained close, as the two teams were tied at 64-64 with five minutes to play. Lock Haven outscored West Chester 19-9 down the fourth quarter stretch, including a late 11-0 run, which gave the visiting Bald Eagles their largest lead of the game (11 points) en route to the 83-73 victory over the Golden Rams.

West Chester shot 41.4 % (24-of-58) from the field in the setback, including a 2-for-11 (18.2 %) effort from three-point range. West Chester also shot 92.0 % (23-of-25) from the line in the loss.

For its part, Lock Haven was led by a 22-point, 14-rebound double-double by Madeline Evans as she was one of five Bald Eagles in double figures in the victory. As a team, Lock Haven shot 47.5 % (28-of-59) from the field, including an 18.8 % (3-of-16) effort from three-point range, while also going 24-for-30 (80.0 %) from the line.  

West Chester ended the game with a slim 36-34 rebounding lead, which led to a 22-12 lead in second-chance points and a 42-40 lead in points in the paint.
