WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Lindsey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored her third goal of the season with 12 minutes to play in the first half, and the West Chester (6-1-3, 4-1-3) defense made this tally stand up in a 1-0 victory over Millersville (4-4-2, 4-3-2) on a picture-perfect Wednesday afternoon on Rockwell Field.
West Chester applied steady pressure to the Millersville defense early in the first half, and this pressure paid off in the 33rd minute when Balmer scored off a perfectly placed assist from
Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa./Middletown), who did tremendously well up to that point, controlling the ball through multiple Millersville defenders to find a cutting Balmer.
West Chester ended the first half with a 9-1 lead in shots and a 2-1 lead in shots on goal, to go along with a 6-1 lead in corners.
In the second half, Millersville ratcheted up its offensive pressure, outshooting West Chester 11-8 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal, but
Grace Keen (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) was excellent, making five second-half saves (six overall) to earn the shutout victory.
With this shutout, Keen moves into a tie for fifth in team history in shutouts with 24, matching Hayley McGee's career mark.
West Chester still ended the match with a 17-12 lead in shots and a 9-2 lead in corners, despite the Marauders holding a slim 6-5 lead in shots on goal.
Sabrina Zimmerman also played well for Millersville, making four saves to slow one of the best offensive units in the PSAC East.
