SHIPPENSBURG, PA –
Sydney Wasdick (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored five goals and secured 10 draw controls while
Keri Barnett (Glenolden, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added a team-high six tallies as No. 1 West Chester downed host Shippensburg, 16-7, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division women's lacrosse match Wednesday afternoon at Robb Complex.
West Chester (12-0, 8-0 PSAC East) kept its two-game lead in the league standings while Shippensburg (6-7, 1-7) dropped its second straight contest.
The host Raiders hung with their top-ranked guests for the first 15 minutes, trailing 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Golden Rams outscored the Raiders 11-2 in the middle quarters to open up an insurmountable 15-5 advantage.
Wasdick, Barnett and
Kendall Fortune (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) potted goals at the beginning of the second quarter to give the Golden Rams some breathing room at 7-3. Following a tally from Shippensburg,
Madeline Edinger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), Barnett and Fortune scored unanswered to make it a 10-4 game at the break.
Wasdick notched her 42nd goal of the season followed by Barnett's 71st tally to open the third quarter and the Golden Rams' advantage swelled to 12-4. Wasdick would add her 43rd and 44th of the season before the quarter was out.
Piper Hammond (Tucson, Ariz./Southridge) got in on the scoring action late in the third as well, and West Chester took a 15-5 lead into the final quarter.
Barnett scored her 73rd of the year to open the fourth, and Shippensburg tacked on a pair of goals later in the fourth to close out the scoring.
Hannah Cornelius (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) made six saves to earn the win in the cage. She played the first three quarters.
Morgan Koons (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made one save in the fourth. Shippensburg keeper Kara Vosburg made 15 saves in a losing effort.
West Chester continues its road swing on Saturday with a 12 p.m. tilt at Millersville University.
