WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Abiah Lane (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) registered 12 kills and had a hand in two blocks to help lead the West Chester University women's volleyball team (4-0) to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) victory over Chestnut Hill (1-1) in Hollinger Field House on Wednesday night.
Lane was one of two Golden Rams with double-digit kills as
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) added 11 of her own, along with six from
Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield),
who led the team in blocks with two.
West Chester jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, led by two early
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban), which prompted an early Chestnut Hill timeout. The early timeout did its job as Chestnut Hill won eight of the next 10 points to tie the set at 12-12. The two sides traded points from here until Chestnut Hill held a 20-19 lead late in the set. West Chester won three in a row to take a 22-19 lead over the Griffins late in the set, forcing a second Chestnut Hill timeout. West Chester closed out the set with an
Abiah Lane (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) kill followed by a
Bria Stepp (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) ace to win the opening set 25-21 over the visiting Griffins.
West Chester and Chestnut Hill traded points throughout the early going before the Golden Rams went on an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead over the Griffins, which forced a quick Chestnut Hill timeout. The Griffin timeout did little to halt the run as West Chester stretched its lead to 19-11 before winning the second set by a 25-18 final on a Chestnut Hill service error.
With the third set tied at 9-9, West Chester went on an 8-3 run to take a 17-12 lead before Chestnut Hill won three points in a row to cut the lead to 17-15 and force the first Golden Ram timeout of the night. Lane opened play out of the timeout with a kill before a
Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) kill, followed by an ace, gave West Chester a 21-18 lead and prompted a Chestnut Hill timeout. Lane got the set to match point with a big kill before Brown ended the match with a kill of her own, her fourth of the night to win the set 25-22 and lift the Golden Rams to the 3-0 victory.
Brown and Stepp tied for the team lead in aces with two each, and Brown led the team in assists with 30, while also registering 10 digs to finish the match with a double-double.
Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led the team in digs with 12, while Brown and
Elianna Freeman (Jersey Village, Tx./Jersey Village) tied for second with 10 digs each.
Kate Hanley led Chestnut Hill in kills with 10, while
Nicole Dimiris, who returned to Hollinger Field House for the final time in her collegiate career after playing for the Golden Rams for the first three years of her career, finished with seven kills, three blocks, and an ace.
West Chester hit .247 in the victory, including a .323 (15-5-31) effort in the third set, while Chestnut Hill hit just .185 after hitting .345 (14-4-29) in the opening set.
