BOWIE, Md.- Abiah Lane (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and
Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) recorded 14 kills each to lead the West Chester University women's volleyball team (7-1) to a 3-2 victory over Bowie State (1-7) on Tuesday night in Maryland. West Chester captured the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-23 finals before dropping the third and fourth sets by 25-21 and 28-26 finals to force a five-set match for the second time in the last four matches. The fifth set was tight throughout, but West Chester emerged victorious, winning by a 15-13 final to capture the match by a 3-2 final.
West Chester jumped out to an early 7-3 first-set lead and, despite a Bulldog comeback bid, which saw Bowie State cut the Golden Ram lead to 19-16 before a Lane kill closed out the set with a 25-19 Golden Ram victory.
West Chester got out to an early lead in the second set before Bowie State battled back to tie the set at 16-16. The two sides traded points to tie the set at 23-23 after an
Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) kill, which sparked a 3-0 run.
Megan Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) and
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) closed out the set with an ace and a kill to give the Golden Rams a 25-23 second-set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Bowie State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the third set before the Golden Rams began their comeback bid. West Chester got the deficit to 23-20 before Bowie State closed out the set on a 2-1 run to extend the match to at least a fourth set.
West Chester took an 11-9 lead in the fourth set after a 4-1 run by the Golden Rams, including a pair of kills by
Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield). Bowie State bounced back with a 9-4 run to take an 18-15 lead over the Golden Rams. The visitors tried to battle back as the fourth set continued and were able to tie the set at 25-25 after another Kwitchoff kill. The Golden Rams got to within a point of closing out the match after an attack error by the Bulldogs before Bowie State went on a 3-0 run to close out the set and force the match to a fifth set.
Bowie State got out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set before West Chester went on a 5-2 run to take a 6-5 lead over its hosts. The two sides traded points as the set continued, with the set entering the late stages tied at 12-12 after a Bowie State error. West Chester took a 13-12 lead before the hosts answered with a kill to tie the set at 13-13. Haines countered with a kill of her own to give West Chester a 14-13 lead before a final Bulldog error lifted the Golden Rams to a 15-13 victory on Tuesday night.
Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) led West Chester in assists with 37, while also leading the team in digs with 16. Richardson added 13 digs of her own along with 11 from
Elianna Freeman (Jersey Village, Tx./Jersey Village). Brown also tied with Haines for the team lead in blocks with 2.0.
