WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Anthony McCall (Philadelphia, Pa./ANC) scored a game-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to help lead the West Chester University men's basketball team (16-4, 10-3) to a 91-66 victory over Mansfield (2-18, 1-13) on Saturday afternoon.
Gabe Moss (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) joined Moss in double figures with 14points and seven rebounds, trailing only
Ruben Rodriguez Jr. (Reading, Pa./Reading), who led the team in rebounding with eight, along with seven points and a team-best four assists and two steals. Fellow Reading native
Myles Grey (Reading, Pa./Reading) scored a career-high 11 off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a late three-pointer.
West Chester never trailed and led for all but 12 seconds in the victory on Saturday afternoon, leading by as many as 32 in the final minutes before Mansfield closed the game on a 7-0 run in a 25-point victory in Hollinger Field House. West Chester is now 8-2 on the year at home and has won seven of those eight home wins by 20 points or more, with the lone exception being an 80-73 win over Shepherd last Wednesday night.
West Chester shot 50.0 %(34-of-68) from the field, including 31.6 % (6-of-19) from three-point range, while also going 17-for-22 (77.3 %) at the free throw line in the victory.
West Chester led by as many as 23 with three minutes to play in the first half after a 12-0 run and carried a 52-32 lead into the halftime break. The Golden Rams led for all but 12 seconds of the first half after starting the game with a Moss dunk as the hosts shot 52.8 % (19-of-36) from the field, including a 3-for-10 effort from beyond the arc. West Chester also shot 73.3% (11-for-15) from the line, as McCall led all scorers in the first half with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and a 1-for-2 effort at the line.
Mansfield shot just 39.3 % (11-for-28) from the field, including a 2-for-11 (18.2 %) effort at the line, while also going 8-for-17 (47.1 %) from the stripe through the first 20 minutes.
West Chester stretched its lead to 27 (69-42) with just over eight minutes played in the second half before extending the lead to 32 with 9:13 to play when
Xavier Vann (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) hit a layup off an assist from
Nix Varano (Chalfont, Pa./La Salle College).
The 32-point lead after this layup was the team's largest lead of the game, but the lead never dipped below 25 points down the stretch as West Chester led by 30 or more in the waning moments en route to the 91-66 victory over Mansfield.
Mansfield shot 42.6 % (23-of-54) from the field in the loss, including a 4-for-17 (23.5 %) effort from beyond the arc, while also shooting 57.1 % (16-of-28) from the line. Nasir Brown led Mansfield in scoring with 12 points, while Jackson Henry and Sterling Scott chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.
West Chester ended the game with a 49-27 lead in rebounding and an 18-9 lead on the offensive glass, which resulted in a 24-6 lead in second-chance points and a 48-38 lead in points in the paint. West Chester also won the turnover battle 21-15 and outscored Mansfield in points off turnovers (29-13) and points off the break (18-12).
Grey's career-high helped lead West Chester to a 43-39 lead in points off the bench in the wire-to-wire victory for the Purple and Gold.
After shooting nearly 53 % from the field in the first half, West Chester ended the game shooting 50.0 % or better from the field for the ninth time this season and the third time in four games as West Chester improved to 8-1 when shooting 50 % or better from the field.
