Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 West Chester Falls to No. 4 Shippensburg, 2-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The sixth-ranked West Chester University field hockey team (8-4, 1-3) returned to action on Vonnie Gros Field on Saturday afternoon against No. 4 Shippensburg (9-2, 3-1). Shippensburg took an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute and used this early advantage to hold on for a 2-0 victory over the home-standing Golden Rams.

Shippensburg scored the first goal in the ninth minute when Anna Gardner finished an assist from Hannah White to give the Raiders the first-quarter lead.

West Chester's defense stiffened from this point and held the high-powered Raider offense off the scoreboard into the fourth quarter but mustered just one third-quarter shot by Nina Scott (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring Ford), which missed high as the Golden Ram offense was unable to find the back of the net.

Shippensburg picked up an important insurance goal in the 50th minute, which gave the fourth-ranked Raiders breathing room with under 10 minutes to play.

Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) made two saves in the setback, making a stop in the first and third quarters to keep the Golden Rams in the game throughout the afternoon.

Shippensburg finished with a 9-1 lead in shots and a 4-0 lead in shots on goal, along with a 6-0 lead in corners.
