Women's Basketball Falls to Bloomsburg, 58-52

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-Kimi Sayson (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, finishing one-point shy of her career high but it was not enough to lead the West Chester University women's basketball team (10-13, 6-11) to a victory over Bloomsburg (12-11, 8-7) as the Huskies escaped Hollinger with a 58-52 victory.

Sayson was the lone Golden Ram in double figures in the loss as Bella Mazur (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) was the next closest, finishing with nine as she was held scoreless in the second half on Wednesday night.

West Chester led early and by as many as seven with 19 seconds to play in the first, but trailed by one heading into the halftime break and was never able to fully recover in the six-point

After a slow start offensively, which saw the Golden Rams shoot just 14.3 % (1-for-7) from the field in the first five minutes of action, West Chester closed the first quarter on a 12-4 run, shooting 5-for-8 from the field to shoot 40.0 % (6-of-15) in the quarter, including a 2-for-3 (66.7 %) effort from three-point range to hold a 14-9 lead heading into the second. West Chester held a seven-point lead late in the first when Marianna Papazoglou (North Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Bloomsburg outscored West Chester 19-13 in the second quarter as West Chester shot just 27.3 % (6-of-22) from the field in the second to trail 28-27 heading into the halftime break.

West Chester shot 32.4 % (12-for-37) from the field, including a 3-for-7 (42.9 %) effort from three-point range as Bella Mazur led West Chester in scoring with nine points, while Maddison Maynard led Bloomsburg in scoring with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and a 4-for-4 effort at the line.

Bloomsburg shot 33.3% (9-of-27) from the field in the first half, including 4-for-9 (44.4%) from three-point range, while also going 6-for-6 at the line.

Bloomsburg outscored West Chester 15-11 through the first nine minutes of the third quarter to take a 43-38 lead over the Golden Rams with a minute to play in the period. West Chester cut the deficit to 43-40 heading into the fourth.

Sayson got West Chester back to within three with 1:40 to play with a driving layup that made the score 53-50 but the Golden Rams did not score again until there was under 20 seconds to play in regulation when Erin Daley (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) hit a layup that cut the deficit to 57-52 but this was as close as the Golden Rams were able to get to coming all the way back in a 58-52 loss on Wednesday night.

Led by 14 points each from Maynard and Kelly Leszycnski, along with 13 from Alison Hatajik, Bloomsburg got back in the win column on Wednesday night, shooting 31.6 % (18-of-57) from the field, including an 8-for-25 (32.0 %) effort from three-point range, while also going 14-for-16 (87.5 %) at the line, including an 8-for-10 effort in the second half.

Bloomsburg also ended the game with a slim 44-40 lead in rebounding, which led to an 18-4 lead in second-chance points. West Chester finished the game with a 17-13 lead in turnovers and an 18-5 lead in points off turnovers, along with a 26-12 lead in points in the paint.

West Chester shot 33.3 % (21-of-63) from the field in the loss, including a 4-for-13 (30.8 %) effort from three-point range, while also going 6-for-14 (42.9 %) at the line, including a 6-for-12 effort in the second half as West Chester dropped its fourth straight.
