WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Wednesday, February 4, marked the 40
th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). West Chester University athletics continued its tradition of running a mini clinic with elementary-aged athletes from the surrounding area on Thursday night inside the Sturzebecker Health Science Center. Attendees were greeted by West Chester student athletes and had the chance to try their hand at women's rugby, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, tennis, and gymnastics.
West Chester welcomed approximately 70 young athletes to Sturzebecker on Thursday night, and the student-athletes from the women's rugby, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, tennis, and gymnastics teams introduced their sports to the young participants by leading drills and coaching them through key skills and techniques. The women's lacrosse and women's golf teams also played a major role in the event, helping with check-in and guiding participants between the various stations set up in the Sturzebecker gyms. Many attendees had the opportunity to learn and try a new sport for the first time, while Golden Ram student-athletes emphasized the importance of teamwork and having fun along the way!

Founded in 1987, NGWSD began as a special day to recognize women's sports. Organizations and female athletes united to bring national attention of girls and women in sports. The event has evolved to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes and the positive influence of sports participation. Backing the NGWSD is the Women's Sports Foundation. The organization helps to expand opportunities for girls and women, of all backgrounds, in sports through research, advocacy, impact and a wide variety of collaborative partnerships. Many prominent female athletes are involved with the foundation.
