Women's Volleyball Surges Past Millersville on Saturday Afternoon in Hollinger

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Looking to halt a modest two-match losing streak, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (6-7, 1-1) returned home on Saturday to host PSAC East rival Millersville (2-7, 0-3). West Chester found itself in a tight battle with the Marauders throughout the afternoon on Saturday but used a late run in each set to earn a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Millersville to improve to 1-1 in PSAC East play after opening conference play at Shippensburg on Friday night.

Gwen Atkins (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) led all players in kills with 13 and picked up her lone ace of the afternoon to close out the 3-0 victory. Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) and Maeve Gallagher (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) chipped in eight and six kills, respectively.

 Elianna Freeman (Jersey Village, Tx./Jersey Village) led West Chester in aces and digs with a pair of aces and 10 digs, while Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkey/Terakki) led the Golden Rams in assists with 26, along with 10 from Bria Stepp (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley).

After a late-set comeback to earn a 26-24 first-set victory, including an important kill by Kwitchoff, which evened the set at 24-24, West Chester captured the second set by a 25-19 final to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Brooke Forester (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell-Egan) closed out this second-set victory with a kill of her own, her fourth of the day, and West Chester used this late-match momentum to jump out to a 15-10 lead in the third set after a Gwen Atkins (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) kill.

The third set remained tight as the two sides found themselves tied at 23-23 in the late stages. Atkins picked up an important kill, her 13th of the day, to get West Chester to match point at 24-23 before closing out the victory with an ace as the Golden Rams improved to 1-1 in league action with a 3-0 victory over Millersville.

West Chester hit .172 (42-22-116) in the victory, including a .256 (16-6-39) effort in the second set as the Golden Rams bounced back well from a hard-fought 3-1 setback at Shippensburg on Friday night.
