NEWBERRY, S.C. – Fourth-ranked Newberry scored with just over four minutes left in regulation to break a 1-all tie and lift the Wolves to a 3-1 non-league field hockey victory over West Chester at Setzler Field Friday night.
Newberry All-American forward, Parker Keeler, scored twice in the final four minutes of play to lift the Wolves to the win. She scored at the 56-minute mark and then added an insurance tally in the final seconds to close out the scoring.
With the loss, West Chester (5-1) saw its five-match winning streak to open the season come to a close while Newberry (6-1) won its fourth straight contest.
Host Newberry struck first with a goal off a penalty corner with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter. Finet Heemskerk notched her third of the year on a blast to the right side.
West Chester answered back a little over one minute into the fourth when
Ciara Margetich (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) dribbled into the Newberry circle and struck a back hand that beat Newberry's goalkeeper just inside the near post for her third goal of the season.
Margetich had another back-hand attempt kicked away with six minutes remaining. It was one of three stellar saves on the night by Wolves' goalkeeper Kensley Harris, who made six stops in all. Harris robbed
Gianna Funari (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) in the first half stopping an attempt from point blank range to keep the game scoreless.
West Chester goalkeeper,
Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) made five saves in the loss.
Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) made a defensive save as well.
The Golden Rams finish up their southern swing on Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. contest at Converse University in Spartanburg, S.C.
