Spartanburg, S.C. – Fourth-ranked West Chester got a pair of fourth-quarter goals to come away with a 2-0 non-league field hockey victory over host Converse University at Hayden Abney Fulp Field at Weisiger Stadium on a sunny, but cool, Sunday morning.
 
West Chester (6-1) split its two-game weekend road trip to the Palmetto State with the win over Converse (2-4).
 
West Chester finally broke through in a tightly contested defensive struggle just two minutes into the fourth quarter. Veerle Hersman (The Netherlands) scored unassisted to give the Golden Rams a 1-0 lead. Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) added another off a penalty corner opportunity four minutes later to double West Chester's lead. Isabella Schute (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Hersman picked up assists on that tally.
 
Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) made two saves to pick up her sixth win of the year and second shutout of the campaign. Converse starting goalkeeper, Camille Hordies, made four saves without allowing a goal through the first three periods. Alena Puentes played the fourth quarter, allowing two goals and making two saves.
 
West Chester returns home next Friday afternoon (Oct. 2) to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with a 4 p.m. contest against Mansfield at Vonnie Gros Field.
