No. 5 West Chester Downs No. 7 Assumption in Season Opener, 4-1

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Junior Anna Finn (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor) scored four goals, including a natural hat trick spanning the second and third quarters, as No. 5 West Chester opened the 2026 field hockey season with a convincing 4-1 victory over No. 7 Assumption on Friday evening at Vonnie Gros Field.
 
The Golden Rams (1-0) overcame an early deficit and scored four unanswered goals to pull away from the Greyhounds (0-1), who struck first in the opening quarter. Finn's four goals tied the school's single-game record in the Division II era, but established a new mark for most goals scored in a player's debut with the Golden Rams.
 
Assumption took a 1-0 lead at the 12:46 mark when Marta Brzoska converted a feed from Elly Schofer at the far post. West Chester answered in the second quarter, with Finn finding the back of the cage at the 25:23 mark off a penalty corner to even the contest at 1-1.
 
Finn struck again with just 30 seconds remaining in the first half, converting another penalty corner with assists from Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Laura Rogers (Delmar, Del./Delmar) to give the Golden Rams a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
 
West Chester continued to apply pressure coming out of the break, and Finn completed her hat trick at the 34:57 mark of the third quarter. Veerle Hersman (The Netherlands) provided the assist as Finn fired a shot into the upper right corner to extend the Golden Rams' lead to 3-1.
 
Finn capped her remarkable four-goal performance in the fourth quarter, scoring at the 56:06 mark off another penalty corner. Brown and Lily Coombs (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) were credited with assists on the game's final goal.
 
Finn finished the night with four goals on six shots on goal, accounting for all four of West Chester's tallies. Rogers added two assists, while Brown recorded two assists and Hersman and Coombs each contributed one.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) made eight saves in her college debut to earn the victory for West Chester. Assumption goalkeeper Carolyn Durand recorded nine saves.
 
The Golden Rams return to action on Sunday at Adelphi for a 1 p.m. non-league tilt on Long Island.
