Jim Brazill Sr., enters his 16th season at his alma mater as an assistant coach for the West Chester University Golden Rams. He will coach the Rams’ defensive ends for the eighth straight year.

Under Brazill’s guidance, West Chester posted the conference's top ranked defense in 2018 and third-ranked stop unit last fall. The Golden Rams led the league in rushing defense in 2018 and passing defense in 2019 as well. Opponents have averaged less than 20 points per game in three of the last four years. The front four were a big reason that the Golden Rams were able to stifle opponent's offenses. The pass rush forced quarterbacks into making quick decisions, or risk taking a sack. WCU has led the league in sacks during two of the past three years while ranking among the Top 6 in the conference in interceptions in four of the last five campaigns.

Ch'aim Smith was named a first team American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America in 2019 and finished his career second in QB hurries in school history. Smith was a first-team all-conference selection as well as a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award, handed out to the top defensive player from a small school.

West Chester also led the PSAC in sacks in 2013 and 2014. His star pupil in 2015, Andrew Cohen, led the conference in sacks and broke the PSAC record for career sacks in the process. The Golden Rams have registered 304 sacks since the 2010 campaign, averaging just over 30 sacks per season. The Rams’ 50 sacks in 2018 were the second-most in a single season in school history.

A 1975 graduate of West Chester University, Brazill holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Physical Education from the university. He was a linebacker for the Golden Rams during his undergraduate years in the mid 1970s for legendary head coach John Furlow.

Brazill retired from teaching at Salesianum (Del.) High School this past spring after 43 years. He spent nearly three decades on the coaching staff at that institution, before jumping on board at West Chester University where both of his sons (Jim Jr. and Mike) attended and played on the football team. He served for 11 years as the head coach at Salesianum, taking his team to the Delaware High School state championship in 1993.

A resident of Coatesville, Pa., Brazill’s eldest son, Jim, spent five years on West Chester’s coaching staff, before stepping away from the college coaching scene at the end of 2012. Jim, Jr., was a team captain and an All-PSAC East selection for WCU in 2003 and again in 2004. Brazill’s other son, Mike, graduated from West Chester University in 2008 and is currently an equipment manager at Villanova University for its football program.
