One of West Chester University’s most electric players when he donned the purple & gold, Osagie Osunde returns to his alma mater for his 14th season mentoring a new generation of running backs while continuing with his recruiting coordinator duties and run-game coordinator responsibilities.
West Chester’s rushing attack continually ranks among the top in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Golden Rams' running attack has ranked either first or second in the PSAC three of the last four years. Osunde presided over the PSAC's leading rushing attack in both 2018 and again in 2021.
Former feature back, Ja'Den McKenzie authored one of the most productive careers in West Chester history under Osunde's tutelage. He led the Golden Rams in rushing in each of his three years at the school while being named a first team All-PSAC East running back each time and taking home both PSAC East Rookie of the Year and Don Hansen FB Gazette Freshman of the Year honors in the Atlantic Region in 2019. He finished 12th all-time on the school's career rushing yards list.
In 2019, West Chester ranked sixth in the conference behind the PSAC East rookie of the year McKenzie, who fell 83 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards in his first season and scored 11 touchdowns - one shy of the school's freshman record for a running back held by Osunde (2003).
WCU ranked fifth in the PSAC in 2017 and 41st nationally, led by Elder, who was named the PSAC Eastern Division athlete of the year. Diminutive in size, Elder more than made up for it in his running ability, authoring back-to-back 1,000 seasons for Osunde and the Golden Rams.
Osunde mentored running back Jarel Elder, helping him to a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons in becoming just the 16th back to every reach that magical number – an elite group that includes Osunde himself. The Golden Rams’ fourth all-time leading rusher, Osunde has seen four of his pupils rush for over 1,000 yards in his seven seasons on staff.
In 2014, then-junior Brandon Monk eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing and ranked 20th in Division II in rushing yards. As a result, West Chester ranked fifth in the PSAC in rushing. In 2015, the Golden Rams ranked sixth in the PSAC in running the football. Monk and Elder combined for 1,000 yards while both averaged nearly five yards per carry. Each back also scored five rushing touchdowns and combined for 116 rushing yards per game, splitting the carries nearly 50/50 (119 attempts for Elder; 115 attempts for Monk).
Rondell White, who literally re-wrote the Golden Rams’ record book and holds virtually every rushing and all-purpose record at the school, was Osunde’s top student prior to his departure in 2013. White finished his career as the school’s all-time leading rusher and all-time leader in all-purpose yards. He set the NCAA Division II record for carries in a single season (406) and left the Golden Rams after amassing over 4,000 rushing yards, 2,000 receiving yards and 1,000 yards in returns. He was only the second player in NCAA history to hit all three milestones. His 3,107 all-purpose yards a year ago was second only to former Division II All-American Danny Woodhead for most in a single season.
West Chester’s rushing offense ranked fifth in the PSAC in 2013 behind White’s 1,989 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Golden Rams averaged 187.5 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry. However, West Chester must now rely upon a bevy of talented backs that are ready to step up in the absence of White. Brandon Monk, Jarel Elder and Eddie Elliott are the featured trio that should all see plenty of playing time. With the help of Osunde, who is fourth on the school’s all-time rushing chart, these three can make their own legacy on South Campus.
The Golden Rams’ rushing offense ranked fourth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in 2012, boasting some of the league’s most exciting young runners and return men. Monk and Elliott have doubled as return men for the Golden Rams and will do so again in 2014. West Chester runners ran for more than 2,000 yards in 2012 and averaged 4.9 yards per carry, scoring a total of 17 touchdowns.
Osunde graduated from WCU in 2007 as the school’s third all-time leading rusher. He ranks among the school’s top six in 10 career categories spanning rushing, all-purpose and kick return records. Osunde rushed for 3,846 yards and averaged 6.4 yards per carry during his outstanding career. His 51 rushing touchdowns is still the school’s standard as well. He also ranks fourth all-time in all-purpose yards with 5,844, second in points scored with 342 and second in touchdowns with 57. Osunde is also seventh all-time in kick return yards in a career and fifth in average per return. He is one of only six Golden Rams to amass 2,000 all-purpose yards in a single season as well.
He volunteered his time with West Chester University’s football program in 2010 and 2011, before being hired on full-time in the summer of 2012. Since then, head coach Bill Zwaan has never looked elsewhere for somebody to tutor his running backs.
Since receiving his master’s degree from West Chester University in Business Administration in 2009, Osunde has been the owner of US Food Manufacturing LLC and American Fit Nutrition located in West Chester, PA.
Osunde graduated from West Chester University with his bachelor’s of science degree in Marketing in 2007. While an undergrad student at WCU, he was the Student-Athlete Advisory Council president in 2007 and 2008 while also being affiliated with LASO and appearing on the Dean’s List.
Osunde is happily married to Alicia Osunde, a West Chester alum, and has three kids Macie, Haley, and Charlotte.
