  • Title
    Assistant Coach - Defensive Line
Sam Scott, another former Golden Ram, returns to his alma mater as the defensive line coach for his second season. He will work with Jim Brazill, Jr. coaching the linemen up front in West Chester’s 4-3 defense.

Scott began coaching with West Chester in 2018, after a six-year professional football career. First starting on the staff as a defensive end coach, assistant defensive line coach and then getting the head defensive line position after previous coach Joe Walsh retired in 2019.

Scott brings his professional football experience and familiarity with the West Chester tradition and culture to the program to help mold and shape the future of West Chester football.  Scott played for West Chester from 2005 to 2010 on both the football and men’s basketball teams, earning four letters in both sports as a two-sport student-athlete. He was a part of a dominant linebacking crew that won a pair of PSAC Eastern Division championships (2007, 2008) and earned multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.

During his time at West Chester, Scott was named all-conference three times (2007, 2008, 2009), All-ECAC twice (2008, 2009), all-region once (2009) and was a D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-America in 2009. He was also named the 2010 Cactus Bowl Defensive MVP. He finished his career at West Chester ranked among the Top 10 all-time in tackles for a loss.

Scott used the great athletic foundation he received at WCU to enter into a six-year professional football career. After NFL workouts with the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars, he found a home in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Calgary Stampeders in 2011. Scott then returned home and played for the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul in 2012. He returned to the CFL to play three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2013-2015) and finished his career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2016).

All stops over his career have prepared him to step in and contribute to the West Chester football family. He was part of the 2018 coaching staff that ranked No. 1 in the country in sacks per game (4.55) as well as the second-ranked rushing defense (67.5 rush yards allowed/game) in the country. Two out of the three years he was on the coaching staff, the defense finished in the top four in the nation in sacks per game. During his time on South Campus, he has also helped produce three All America defensive ends: Diquan Gilbert (Don Hansen FB Gazette HM), Ch’aim Smith (AFCA 1st team) and Michael Gabora (Co-SIDA Academic All America ®).

Scott graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in 2010 with a double minor in Accounting & Business Geographic Information Systems. Scott was a member of N.A.B.A. (National Association of Black Accountants) as a student. Scott currently works full-time as a Human Performance Coach for Titus Sports Academy (Delaware), training NFL, MLB and collegiate athletes.

Sam is happily married to West Chester University graduate, Chantal Whitehead-Scott (’08), and has two children – Sam III and Cannon.
