The only head coach West Chester University’s intercollegiate women’s rugby team has ever known, Tony DeRemer enters his 22nd season at the helm of his alma mater.
During his 21-year college coaching career at the varsity level, DeRemer has guided West Chester University to one national championship, six conference championships and eight appearances in the USA Rugby Tournament. In addition to mentoring three student-athletes who have participated in the USA Rugby development program, he has tutored 18 All-Americans on the rugby pitch - 12 first-team selections. He has guided his charges to their respective conference title game in 13 out of 21 years and has failed to qualify for the postseason only twice in his college coaching career. DeRemer also mentored current USA Eagles 15s player, Autumn Czaplicki, who had been in residence with the USA 7's Rugby Squad at the USA Rugby Training Center in Chula Vista, California before her call-up to the 15s National Squad.
DeRemer has authored an overall record of 157-102-4 (.591) during his time on the Golden Rams' sideline. Before the Golden Rams made the leap to varsity status for the Fall 2004 campaign, he coached the club team at WCU for nearly a decade. He continually raises the bar of expectations for the program year-in and year-out.
In the fall of 2023, West Chester returned to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) postseason for the third year in a row, searching for its third consecutive NIRA Tier II Championship game appearance. West Chester traveled to Davenport for the semifinals and fell to the higher seeded Panthers to bring the the 15's season to its conclusion. West Chester put a pair of ruggers on the All-NIRA3 team, including first-team honoree Bayla Shindledecker. This past Spring, DeRemer qualified his club for the USA Rugby 7s Collegiate Championships for the second year in a row, competing in the Bowl Round.
In 2021, West Chester made a return trip to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Tier II title game. However, a loss to American International College prevented a repeat of the Golden Rams' national championship from 2019 (the fall 2020 campaign was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic). West Chester put seven ruggers on the All-NIRA team, including five first-team honorees. This past spring, DeRemer qualified his club for the USA Rugby 7s Collegiate Championships eventually reaching the bowl final.
In the fall of 2019, DeRemer led his charges to the first undefeated season in school history, culminating in the first national championship as well. The Golden Rams finished the year 11-0 and defeated Brown University in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Tier II title game.
The PA native guided his charges to the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) championship game the first seven years as varsity status, winning the conference crown three straight seasons (2006-08). DeRemer followed up that effort with a Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) championship in the spring of 2012. That was followed by three straight trips to the Mason-Dixon Championship Game with a pair of conference titles the second and third years.
Those Mason-Dixon crowns in the spring of 2013 and 2014 secured a Top-8 seed in the ensuing USA Rugby Tournament. West Chester managed a pair of playoff runs to the national semifinals each year.
In 2015-16, West Chester entered into a national conference made up of all NCAA varsity women's rugby programs, and the National Collegiate Varsity Women's Rugby Association (NCVWRA) was formed. From that was born the NIRA. That conference split into tiers in 2019-20. West Chester was placed in Tier II and ran the table to the national championship. The Golden Rams' seven-win improvement from 2018 to 2019 was the largest margin in the NIRA.
On September 15, 2007, West Chester University seized its once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, defeating Eastern Illinois, 20-19, in the very first NCAA sanctioned women’s rugby match between two intercollegiate varsity programs. In September 2019, the women's rugby program witnessed its first alum to be inducted into the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame when former All-American, USA Rugby player and pupil of DeRemer's, Steph Burkhardt, was enshrined.
DeRemer began his club head coaching career at WCU in the fall of 1996 and remained with the squad until it was disbanded in 2003-04 in preparation for a varsity-level program. Under his guidance, the WCU club program captured numerous tournament championships and won several local and territorial union titles.
In the summer of 2004, West Chester University tabbed DeRemer as the first NCAA Division II women’s rugby head coach and elevated the seven-year mentor to full-time head coaching status during the summer of 2008.
DeRemer’s club coaching career produced four USA collegiate All-Americans, while in the summer of 2003 he served on the staff of the USA women’s under-23 national team.
DeRemer’s credentials include a USA Rugby Level III coaching accreditation and a USA Level C2 referee certification.
DeRemer has also played competitive rugby with the highly regarded Brandywine Rugby Club. He also spent time with the South Jersey Men’s Rugby Club (1990-93).
A native of Carlisle, Pa., DeRemer was president and captain of the West Chester University men’s rugby club program for four years during his college playing days (1986-90). He finished up his bachelor's of science degree in Liberal Studies with minors in Professional Education and Health Science in 2013.
