Steve Mazurek begins his ninth season as the head coach of both the men's and women's swimming & diving squads, following a 9-year stint as an assistant coach with the Golden Rams.
Mazurek is in his 18th season on staff at his alma mater. A former member of the Golden Rams' men's swimming team, he has helped both the men's and women's squads to a conference title in each of the past seven years, and 10 straight, in which West Chester has entered the conference meet. In his first eight years heading up West Chester's swim program, Mazurek has won 11 combined coach of the year awards (7 women's; 4 men's) while eight swimmers have taken home swimmer of the year plaudits (6 women) and another nine freshman of the year (5 men). He has coached a pair of national champions while a diver has also won a national title during his tenure and has coached the women's team to a Top 5 finish in the team standings at the NCAA Championships three times.
Mazurek brought the swim team out of a complete shutdown in activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, which included not competing at the PSAC Championships which were still held despite the situation related to the pandemic, and the Golden Rams seemed to pick up right where they had left off. He got his swimmers back up to speed through a rigorous training regiment and managed to capture both the men's and women's swimming titles at each of the last four PSAC Swimming Championships.
West Chester, which had won 22Â consecutive men's team titles from 1999Â to 2020 - but saw that streak snapped when the Golden Rams did not compete in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic - recaptured the top spot unseating Bloomsburg in 2022. It was the Golden Rams' 23rd straight team title on the men's side in conference meets in which they participated while the women, who had won 14 consecutive team titles from 2007 to 2020 recaptured the top spot making it 15 straight team titles in conference meets in which they have participated. That number has now grown to 26 on the men's side and 18 on the women's side. Meanwhile, Mazurek has overseen a combined 16 major award winners in the conference -- men's and women's combined -- in just eight seasons as a head coach.
A total of 16 female swimmers have earned 61 All-America certificates while three men have taken home 13 All-America citations at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships under Mazurek's tutelage. Additionally, a total of 15 relays (14 women's relays, 1 men's relay) have also earned All-America plaudits.
Â
In a decade as top assistant, Mazurek swimmers earned 14 individual NCAA Division II titles and two "NCAA Swimmer of the Year" distinctions (Kitty Fischer and current assistant coach Victor Polyakov) while West Chester's distance program became a Division II powerhouse by scoring more combined distance points in NCAA Championship competition than any other team in the nation twice (2012-13 and 2013-14) helping to propel the women's team to a fourth-place trophy and the men's team to a sixth-place finish in 2014.
His brightest pupil as head coach was English swimmer Georgia Wright, who took home eight national championships and set the NCAA Division II record in the 1000-yard freestyle on three separate occasions. The most decorated female swimmer in school history under Mazurek's watch graduated in 2020 with 15 conference titles and three conference female swimmer of the year plaudits.
In the off-season, Mazurek inherited West Chester University's regionally renowned and award-winning swim lessons program, teaching thousands of children how to swim and be safe in and around the water.
Â
West Chester swimmers have just about rewritten the PSAC men's and women's PSAC record books since Mazurek's arrival. Ten women's conference individual records and all five relay top marks reside in the Delaware Valley while eight men's individual marks and another relay record belong to the Purple & Gold. Of the 18 records, only two women did not swim for Mazurek as either an assistant, or head, coach. In 2014, three of Mazurek's distance swimmers finished in the top five at the NCAA Division II men's championship in the 500 freestyle, including Victor Polyakov, the meet's only four-event winner and former Division II record holder in the 500 freestyle. In 2016, Polyakov captured the NCAA title in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1 minute, 44.95 seconds, making him one of only a few swimmers in Division II history to win five titles in five different events. He added another distinction to his plethora of accomplishments when he was named the PSAC Swimmer of the Year for the fourth time – making him the only swimmer in conference history to win that award all four years of their college career.
At the 2022 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, Ann Carozza set two national records in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly while winning a national championship in the 200 fly. She is a seven-time All-American and holds six PSAC swimming records to date.
Â
A member of the men's team that kick-started its current 22-year PSAC Championship streak, Mazurek returned to his alma mater in 2008. In addition to his coaching duties, Mazurek served as WCU's Pool Manager and oversaw each of the programs that utilize the North and South Campus pools. He also ran one of the largest lifeguard certification programs in Pennsylvania and serves as an assistant director in WCU's famed swim lesson program, one of the biggest seasonal swim camps in the United States.
Â
Mazurek is entering the 21st year of his coaching career, which includes six years as a head age group coach and assistant high school coach in the Neshaminy School District and two years as a Golden Rams Aquatics age group coach. While working on his M.Ed., Mazurek spent one year teaching kindergarten in Bucks County as well. Â
Â
Mazurek is a 2002 West Chester University graduate with a B.A. in Communications. In 2006, he received his Master of Education from La Salle University. He is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association. He also earned a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell.
