WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University dedicated Vonnie Gros Field in honor of its former field hockey and women’s lacrosse coach last Sunday in a morning dedication ceremony and pre-game announcement.
Gros, a former professor as well as varsity athletic coaching mentor, was on hand as a plaque atop the hill looking down on the multi-purpose turf field was unveiled before a large gathering of former West Chester University female athletes, friends and donors to the University.
The event was also used to kick off the University’s celebration of 50 years of women’s athletics at West Chester University. The field hockey team, one of the pioneers of women’s athletics at the institution, wore commemorative patches on their kilts in the team’s win over long-time rival Ursinus that afternoon.
More than $165,000 was raised in the effort to name the turf field after Vonnie Gros and contribute to upgrades to the facility.
