Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Bryan Nugent streaked down the near side and turned in at the penalty area, booting a shot past Mercyhurst’s keeper with 18 seconds left in the first overtime Saturday afternoon that lifted West Chester to a 2-1 upset victory over No. 7 Mercyhurst at the soccer field.

West Chester (6-4-2) increased its winning streak to a modest two games, while taking down a Top 10 program and the Atlantic Region’s top-ranked club. The Golden Rams were ranked 10th in the Atlantic Region entering this week’s competitions.

Mercyhurst (6-2-2) drew first blood with a goal by Billy Colton three minutes after halftime. Colton took a centering pass from Dean Atkins and blasted a shot past WCU goalkeeper Garret Santora for a 1-0 advantage.

However, West Chester responded in the 69th minute when freshman midfielder Jabari De Coteau tucked a shot inside the near post off a throw-in that gave the hosts new life.

Nugent scored the game winner just before the first overtime period was to expire, sending the Golden Rams’ bench pouring out onto the pitch in celebration.

Santora was credited with three saves while Danny Mudd made four for Mercyhurst.
