WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Ralph Hegamin posted his second straight double-double as West Chester handed rookie head coach Damien Blair his first college win by the measure of 74-68 over visiting Chestnut Hill Sunday afternoon in the WCU Tip-Off Tournament for men's basketball.
Hegamin poured in 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as West Chester (1-1) held Chestnut Hill (0-2) at bay nailing seven of its last eight free throws in the final 30 seconds of the game.
Kevin Stokes (10 points) put West Chester in front for good with a three-pointer at the 4:12 mark of the second half. It was the last of 10 lead changes in what was a close battle the entire way. No team led by more than eight points the whole afternoon.
West Chester held a 35-24 advantage on the boards and limited Chestnut Hill to two second-chance points. One day removed from allowing Bloomfield to shoot better than 50 percent from the field, the Golden Rams held the Griffins to 38.1 percent in the first half and 41.3 percent for the game.
Hegamin went 13 of 18 from the charity stripe.
West Chester put four players in double figures, including Stokes' 10 off the bench. Kenneth St. George scored 14 points and Kehinde Roberts also contributed 10.
David Goode led three players in double figures for Chestnut Hill with 22 points and chipped in 11 rebounds.
West Chester will hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when the Rams travel to University of the Sciences.
