West Chester Runs Away From Phila. U., 69-60

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Dana Weems led four players in double figures with 18 as West Chester used a solid second-half effort to overcome visiting Philadelphia University, 69-60, Saturday afternoon in a non-league women’s basketball contest inside Hollinger Field House.

West Chester (3-1) outscored Philadelphia (1-1) by 12 in the second half, which erased a three-point deficit heading into the locker rooms at the break. The Golden Rams went on a 16-10 run over a nine-minute span in the second session that opened up a double-digit lead for the hosts, who never looked back.

Phila U’s Jessica Romano scored 18 points in the second half, finishing with a game-high 30 for the visiting Rams. However, West Chester’s all-around effort defensively on the rest of her teammates was the key to the victory. Steph Agger was the only other player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Philadelphia shot 58.3 percent in the first half to build that three-point halftime advantage. However, West Chester hung tough, shooting 51.7 percent itself. The Golden Rams’ defense limited Phila U to 30 percent (9-for-30) from the floor in the second half.

Janelle Garber posted 15 points and nine rebounds for the hosts. Bridget Carlin notched 11 points and Megan Stewart 10. Weems pulled down eight rebounds.

West Chester is home again on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tilt against Wilmington.
