RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond scored once in each half and held West Chester University to just one shot as the Spiders went on to a 2-0 victory over the Golden Rams in an Atlantic 10 field hockey contest Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (7-8, 2-1 Atlantic 10) suffered its first loss in conference play to Richmond (8-7, 3-0) in a battle of first-place teams.
Dani Pycroft scored 13 minutes into the game to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Katelin Peterson then scored on a breakaway in the 49th minute to close out the scoring. West Chester held Atlantic 10 leading scorer Sarah Blythe-Wood without a tally in the tilt.
Joelle Zarefoss (7-8) made six saves going the distance in the cage for West Chester. Jacki Raithel made one save on the Rams' only shot of the game fired by Michelle Schrift, who was also credited with a defensive save as well.
West Chester will be back in action at home next Friday when Temple visits Vonnie Gros Field for a critical Atlantic 10 encounter.
