SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – West Chester University’s 11-time defending PSAC championship squad opened defense of its title with a 109.5-90.5 victory over host Shippensburg in a dual meet Saturday afternoon.
West Chester and Shippensburg are considered two of the favorites entering the 2009-10 swimming season. The Golden Rams showed that they will not relinquish their stranglehold on the conference too easily.
West Chester took first place in seven events, including Brendan Fanslau as a double-winner to top Shippensburg. Fanslau captured the 50-yard freestyle in 22.37 seconds while also taking the 100 free in 49.92 seconds.
Newcomer Calvin Starosta was part of the Golden Rams’ first-place 200 medley relay squad while also winning the 100 backstroke in 54.94. Senior Max Bernardes won the 200 Individual Medley (2:00.02) and was runner-up in the 1000 free (10:16.73).
Kenny McCormick won the 200 free in 1:48.25 and also placed runner-up in the 500 free (4:57.08) and the 200 IM (2:02.37), behind teammate Bernardes.
The Golden Rams swept the top three spots in the 100 butterfly. David Smoker was first to the wall in 53.30 with Phil Luzny second (53.50) and Eric Kunzman third (53.75).
The 200 medley relay team consisting of Starosta, Peter Madueno, Smoker and Josh Pauley clocked a winning time of 1:40.03.
West Chester hosts Division I foe Lehigh on Oct. 24 at the Graham Natatorium in its home opener.
