SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Ricky Williamson scored twice to lead West Chester University’s men’s soccer squad to a 3-1 victory over host Shippensburg in a PSAC East contest at David See Field Tuesday evening.
West Chester (3-5-2, 1-3-2 PSAC East) ended a frustrating two-game slide in which the Golden Rams felt they could have won or tied both contests while Shippensburg (0-7-4, 0-3-2) is still in search of its first win in 2009.
Coming off a disappointing 3-2 setback at home to Cal in which the Rams nearly pulled off a three-goal comeback in the second half, West Chester was determined to get things going early against the winless Raiders.
Williamson put the visitors on the board in the 15th minute off an assist from J.J. DiFerdinando. In the 36th minute, Neil Gallagher took a pass from Ryan Dicci and doubled the Rams’ lead before the break.
In the final seconds of the first half, Dee Barlee finally put the hosts on the board. However, Williamson pushed WCU’s advantage back to two goals with a tally from Chris Ponto in the 51st minute.
Peter Weiss started in goal and played the first 51 minutes to pick up the win in net for West Chester. Weiss allowed Shippensburg’s goal and did not record a save. Garrett Bleiler came on to relieve Weiss and posted four saves the rest of the way. The Raiders’ Clay Sale made two saves, going the distance in net.
Shippensburg outshot West Chester, 14-12, including 9-6 in the second half. However, the Golden Rams held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
West Chester is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Wilmington for a non-league contest.
