Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Ralph Hegamin posted a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead host West Chester to a 77-52 victory over visiting University of the Sciences (Phila.) in the men’s basketball season opener for both schools Tuesday night inside Hollinger Field House.

Hegamin scored 14 of his 21 points in the first half, staking the Golden Rams (1-0) to a 36-22 halftime advantage. Tim Flecken had 16 points in his collegiate debut.

West Chester doubled its lead from 8 to 16 points over a two-minute span near the end of the first half that opened up an otherwise close contest. Flecken drained one of his four 3-point field goals on the night with 58 seconds remaining to close out the minor run.

USP (0-1) got the deficit under 10 points two minutes into the second half (39-30). But, West Chester answered with a 12-3 run to push the advantage back to 18 (51-33). Flecken had five points in that span.

The Rams’ lead dipped to 10 with 11:16 to go. However, the Devils could get no closer. Harley Williamson and Flecken nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, and Williamson added another jumper in the paint and the hosts were back out in front 61-43. West Chester eventually nudged the lead to 26 in the waning moments of the game.

Greg Maugle scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Williamson had nine points, seven boards and four assists in his first college game. Isaiah Twine contributed eight points in his first college action.

West Chester hits the road for the first time Thursday when it travels to Lincoln University for a 7 p.m. non-league tilt.
