WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Kenneth St. George scored a game-high 21 points, and Ralph Hegamin added 19 points and 12 rebounds as host West Chester hung on in the end for a 91-82 victory over visiting Mansfield in PSAC East men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (16-9, 7-5 PSAC East) moved into sole possession of third place with the win over Mansfield (13-11, 6-6) coupled with East Stroudsburg’s loss at Cheyney on Saturday. The three schools had been deadlocked in a three-way tie for that third spot in the league standings heading into the day’s action.
Anthony Haley, who scored 15 points off the bench for the Golden Rams, nailed a 3-pointer that ignited a 10-1 run five minutes into the second half and put West Chester in the lead, 57-49, with 12:54 remaining. Haley accounted five of the 10 points during the run and assisted on a St. George jumper that closed the spurt.
The Golden Rams eventually pushed the advantage to 10 on three separate occasions, and Mansfield would not get any closer than four (76-72) with three minutes to go.
St. George scored 15 of his 21 points after halftime when the hosts shot 57.7 percent from the floor. All of those points were needed as the Mountaineers shot 50 percent (16-for-32) after the break, scoring 45 points in the stanza.
The Golden Rams put four players in double figures as Kehinde Roberts notched 10 points before fouling out of the game. Kevin Stokes had a season-high eight assists.
Chris Greene had 20 points for Mansfield and Ryan Callahan 19. Yuseff Carr contributed 16 points.
West Chester outrebounded Mansfield, 48-26, grabbing 21 offensive boards in the process.
West Chester welcomes Shippensburg to Hollinger Field House on Wednesday evening for an 8 p.m. tip-off as the final week of the regular-season looms with the Rams fighting for their first playoff berth in three years.
