Clarion Women Top West Chester In Tennis, 7-2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Clarion University swept the doubles competition and took four of the six singles matches to cruise to a 7-2 win over West Chester in a college women’s tennis match at the Arthur Ashe Youth Teaching & Education Center in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon.

Claire Afrassiabian and Teresa Grasso picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but it was not enough for West Chester (2-4) in its first spring match of 2009. Clarion took Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 6 singles at the indoor facility after sweeping the doubles to open up a 3-0 lead.

Afrassiabian downed Kassie Leuschel, 6-2, 7-5 and Grasso topped Haylee Gardner, 6-3, 6-2 for West Chester’s only wins. Bridget Dougherty was edged by Devin Rombach at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 7-5 in one of the closest and most exciting matches of the afternoon.

West Chester returns to the courts on Sunday with a match against Washington College (Md.) in Lewes, Del.
