WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Bob Stumpo went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Kyle Orensky hit a three-run homer as host West Chester overcame seven errors to defeat visiting Philadelphia University, 12-7, at Serpico Stadium on a cold and overcast Tuesday afternoon.
Five different Golden Rams’ pitchers limited PhilaU to just three hits. However, the visiting Rams capitalized on the hosts’ errant throws to score four unearned runs in the game.
PhilaU (1-6) built a 3-1 lead after three innings on just one hit. The Rams went hitless from the second thru the sixth, before breaking through in the seventh to score four runs on two hits. That rally came two innings too late as West Chester (7-7) put up five in the fifth and four more in the sixth to come from behind and take an 11-3 lead it would never relinquish.
Billy Huntzinger (1-1) came on in relief of starter Brian Lawlor in the fourth inning and quieted the visitor’s bats. He pitched three hitless innings, walking one and striking out two to pick up his first college win. Lawlor was effective. He lasted three innings and yielded just one earned run on one hit. He walked three, struck out one and threw two wild pitches.
PhilaU starter Garrett Buehler (0-2) lasted 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, only two of which were earned. He cruised through West Chester’s lineup twice before running out of steam in the fifth inning.
After retiring the leadoff batter, Buehler hit Matt Cotellese and gave up back-to-back singles to load the bases. He got the next man to pop out to second base, but hit Joe Wendle, forcing in a run. PhilaU’s third baseman then threw away a groundball that would have ended the inning, and West Chester plated four more runs to jump in front 7-3.
Orensky finished 2-for-4 with his three-run smash in the sixth for the Golden Rams. Nick Spisak went 2-for-5 with an RBI, but committed four errors in the field.
Tyler Mentzer, Rob Fisher and Mike Anderson each had a hit and collected an RBI in the loss for PhilaU.
West Chester returns to the diamond at Serpico Stadium on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for a nine-inning affair with University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP).
