Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep Of Millersville

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Bob Stumpo’s two-out, RBI double in the top of the eighth inning scored Charlie Kelly from second base with the winning run in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader Saturday, and West Chester cruised to an 8-0 win over Millersville in the nightcap to complete a four-game weekend sweep of the Marauders to open league play.

West Chester (12-7, 4-0 PSAC East) swept all four contests from Millersville (8-11, 0-4) on the first weekend of league play and stand atop the Eastern Division standings with rival Kutztown, who swept East Stroudsburg.

However, the Golden Rams almost let the first game Saturday slip away, allowing the hosts to tie the score in their final at bats on two unearned runs. The Marauders’ Chris Edgar reached on an error by starting pitcher David Slusser, and Keith Spencer walked.

Scott Slembecker then sacrificed the two base runners into scoring position, before Lance Miller hit an RBI groundout for the second out of the inning. After Ryan McCormick singled in the game-tying run and Scott Stevens then walked, West Chester head coach Greg Mamula went to his closer Eric Carmichael (1-0) to stop the bleeding.

Carmichael intentionally walked Derek Kline to load the bases with two outs. Cody Wile grounded to third baseman Josh Heyne, who turned around and stepped on the bag to end the inning.

Blair Dameron started things off in extra innings with a single to left, and Kelly then hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Dameron at second. Kelly then stole second base, and after Joe Wendle struck out, Stumpo delivered his game-winning double to score Kelly.

West Chester had built a 2-0 lead when Dameron scored on a balk call in the second inning, and Matt Cotellese singled home Nick Spisak in the fifth inning after the shortstop had doubled.

Cotellese was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Dameron went 2-for-3. Slusser started on the mound, lasting 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run. He surrendered three hits and three walks while striking out two and hitting two batters.

Carmichael picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings, walking one intentionally and striking out one.

Forrest Mengle started for Millersville and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three without giving up a walk. Kline pitched the final two innings, suffering the loss, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out two.

McCormick was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Marauders.

Cotellese, Kelly and Stump each collected two hits in the nightcap, and Wendle went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Golden Rams scored twice in the first and twice in the third, and added another in the sixth before tacking on three insurance runs in the seventh.

Bret Moyer (3-1) picked up the complete-game win on the mound. He scattered three hits and struck out seven. He did hit three batters.

Zach Eckley suffered the defeat in a start for Millersville. He allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits in three innings of work. He walked three and struck out three. Kyle Belanchick pitched two innings of scoreless middle relief, scattering two hits. Andrew Hunt pitched one-third of an inning, and Andrew Clemens pitched the final 1.2 innings. Clemens yielded three runs, only one of which was earned.

Chris Edgar, Kasey Cooper and Scott Slembecker each had a hit for Millersville.

West Chester will travel to Philadelphia University on Monday in a rematch of last week’s 12-7 Golden Rams’ win at Serpico.
