PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Kyle Orensky’s three-run homer highlighted an eight-run sixth as visiting West Chester pulled away from host Philadelphia University in a 15-7 non-league baseball victory Monday afternoon.
West Chester (13-7) scored five runs in the second inning to open up a 6-2 lead. However, PhilaU (1-8) crawled back into the contest and eventually trailed 7-5 entering the top of the sixth when the Golden Rams’ put up eight runs to break out to a 15-5 advantage. PhilaU scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but never seriously threatened.
Nick Spisak led off West Chester’s sixth with a single, Matt Cotellese flied out and Blair Dameron walked. Orensky then blasted his team-leading fourth home run of the season that chased starter Jared Farbman (1-2), who suffered the loss on the mound.
John Pugh relieved Farbman, but surrendered five more runs on four hits before getting out of the inning. Brandon Wolfe hit a two-run double, and Spisak and Cotellese each produced run-scoring doubles in their second trips to the plate in the frame.
Orensky hit a run-scoring single in the first to put West Chester up 1-0. PhilaU countered with two of their own in the bottom half. West Chester starter Steve Richter walked the first three batters of the game and head coach Greg Mamula went to Greg Ball right away.
Kevin McGrath delivered a two-run double in the second, and Cotellese produced a two-run triple. Orensky hit a sacrifice fly as well.
Cotellese finished 2-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI. Orensky was 3-for-3 with five RBI. Wolfe went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Both runs in the first were charged to Richter. Greg Ball (1-0) came on to limit Philadelphia’s damage and get out of the inning. He pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out two in picking up his first win of the season. Billy Huntzinger relieved Ball in the fifth and pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two. Eric Carmichael finished up the final three innings to earn his second save. He allowed two runs, one of them earned, on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Farbman lasted 5.1 innings, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on nine hits. He walked six and struck out two. John Pugh came in and got out of the sixth inning for PhilaU, but was responsible for five runs on four hits before exiting. Garrett Buehler, Brian Rousseau and Rob Fisher eached pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Fisher struck out the side in the ninth.
West Chester travels back to the city Tuesday afternoon for the first round of the Bill Giles Classic. The Golden Rams take on University of the Sciences (USP) at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow for the right to play in the Bill Giles Classic championship game in Citizens Bank Ballpark on April 14.
