WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Joe Wendle stole home on the back end of a double steal to score the winning run in game one while Connor Kerins allowed four hits in the nightcap as West Chester University swept visiting Mansfield, 4-3 and 9-1, respectively, in a PSAC East baseball doubleheader at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (20-8, 9-1 PSAC East) remains one-half back back of idle Kutztown in the Eastern Division with an important four-game set against the Bears looming next Friday and Saturday. Mansfield (10-20, 0-6) is still in search of its first league triumph.
With game one knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wendle doubled over the centerfielder’s head with one out. Bob Stumpo was hit by a pitch, and Charlie Kelly hit into a fielder’s choice, erasing Stumpo at second and moving Wendle to third with two outs.
Kelly was then ruled safe on a steal of second base, and Wendle raced home with the winning run on the throw down.
Rams’ starter Jason Bowman (2-3) lasted six innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs and striking out two without walking a batter. Eric Carmichael pitched the seventh, earning his fourth save of the season.
Wendle finished 2-for-3 in the opener, and Kyle Orensky and Josh Heyne produced RBIs.
Nick Spisak was 1-for-2 in the nightcap with a two-run homer in the sixth. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the third. Kelly went 1-for-3 with two RBI in the second tilt as well.
Kerins (4-1) allowed just one run, walked one and struck out three for the win. Billy Huntzinger came on in the seventh to close out the game. Heyne capped off a productive day going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
