West Chester Runs Win Streak to Five With A 4-1 Win In Vonnie Gros Classic

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Alyssa Gallen came off the bench to score two goals and Kelsie Ward added a goal and an assist to lead West Chester to a 4-1 win over visiting Appalachian State on soggy Friday evening in the second game of the Vonnie Gros Classic.

West Chester (5-0) scored three times in the opening half to jump out to a 3-1 lead at the break. Appalachian State (2-3) mustered just seven shots, two in the second half, in the loss. North Carolina blanked Villanova, 7-0, in the first game of the day.

The Golden Rams scored in the fifth minute of the contest off a penalty corner when Melissa LeNoir tipped a shot from Leah Angstadt past Appalachian State goalkeeper Bridgette Street. Fifteen minutes later, Ward ripped a shot past Street off another corner that doubled the hosts’ advantage.

West Chester outshot its opponent 15-5 in the first half, thanks in large part to a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. The two early tallies off corners put the Rams in the driver’s seat right away.

Gallen then tipped another blast from Ward past Street in the 25th minute to give West Chester its largest lead of the day. The Mountaineers struck in the 33rd minute when Jenn Heiss made a nice move at the top of the circle to beat the Rams’ defenders and poked one past WCU goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).

Zarefoss was called upon to make just three saves in the contest. Her defense out in front limited ASU’s chances all night. Street allowed all four goals and made 12 saves in 66 minutes of play, before being relieved for Denise Adams with 4:26 to play. Adams did not make a save.

West Chester held a 26-7 advantage in shots for the game.

Angstadt finished with two assists for the Golden Rams. Brynn Adams and Beth Wong each picked up an assist on Ward’s goal off a penalty corner.

The Golden Rams put their unbeaten record to the test tomorrow against fellow unbeaten and second-ranked North Carolina at 5 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field. The Classic concludes at 7:30 p.m. with Villanova taking on Appalachian State.
