Ursinus Stops West Chester In OT, 4-3

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
- Jennifer Bayzick's third goal of the game 3:29 into overtime lifted Ursinus to a 4-3 victory over host West Chester University in the 31st annual Eleanor Snell field hockey game at Vonnie Gros Field on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon.

The loss snaps West Chester's (5-7) modest two-game win streak on the year while Ursinus (10-1), who is ranked fourth nationally in Division III, ran its winning streak to 10 straight, following a season-opening loss to Messiah.

With the win, Ursinus pulled even in the all-time series with West Chester (23-23-9) while also evening up the Eleanor Snell series (14-14-3). The overtime affair marked the fourth time in the last five years that the contest between two of the oldest field hockey programs in the country has been decided in extra time. West Chester is 1-3 in those four games.

The Golden Rams trailed 3-2 late into the second half when they were awarded a penalty stroke because the ball got stuck underneath Bears' goalkeeper Lauren Lightwood-Mater. Leah Angstadt roofed the shot over the outstretched Lightwood-Mater into the upper left-hand corner fo the cage to convert the stroke. That game-tying tally came with 3:45 left in regulation.

The teams traded goals all day long with Ursinus getting on the board first off a shot from Bayzick 10 minutes into the tilt. West Chester's Nicole Fiorilla banged home a rebound of a shot that hit the post and ricocheted right to her stick as she stood directly in front of the cage. That was in the 27th minute.

However, that tie was short-lived as Alyssa Thren notched her 15th goal of the year on an unassisted effort one minute later.

Angstadt scored the first of her two goals on the day off a penalty corner in the 45th minute. A mere 14 minutes later, Bayzick scored her second of the day with an assist to Bridget Resetco in the 59th minute.

Kristen Arnold (4-4) made seven saves in the loss for West Chester. Lightwood-Mater (10-1) was credited with five stops for Ursinus.

Ursinus was awarded 17 penalty corners to West Chester's eight, including four straight in the overtime that eventually led to the game-winning goal. The Golden Rams could never clear its end of the field in the extra time.

West Chester will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 15 when it travels to St. Joseph's for an Atlantic 10 matchup with the Hawks.
