ERIE, Pa. - Neil Gallahger scored in the 17th minute, and Peter Weiss made 11 saves in 110 minutes of action, as West Chester University's men's soccer squad went on the road and earned a 1-1 double-overtime tie with No. 4 Mercyhurst Friday night.
West Chester (5-9-1, 0-6-1 PSAC East) halted a three-game winless streak with its first point of the season. Mercyhurst (12-0-3, 3-0-3) remains unbeaten on the year, but failed to pick up two more points in its quest for a regular-season title in the league standings.
Gallagher finished off a nice cross from Ricky Williamson with a header that beat Mercyhurst goalkeeper Diego Gustin and put the visitors up, 1-0. It was Gallagher's second goal of the season.
Christopher Hampel netted his 10th of the year in the 59th minute to knot things up for the Lakers. He finished off a cross from Alex Manea, putting the ball in the upper left-hand corner.
Mercyhurst outshot West Chester by a 28-6 margin and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. However, Weiss was up to the challenge and kept the Golden Rams in the game all afternoon.
Gustin made one save and allowed one goal in 110 minutes of action.
West Chester will play Gannon Saturday afternoon at Edinboro.
