WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University scored one goal before halftime and added two insurance tallies in the second half to pick up a 3-0 victory over visiting LaSalle in the Atlantic 10 opener for both schools at Vonnie Gros Field Friday afternoon.
West Chester (4-6, 1-0 Atlantic 10) controlled the tempo of the tilt throughout, never letting LaSalle (5-7, 0-1) get on track. The Golden Rams held the Explorers to one shot in the first half and just five for the entire game.
Red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Kristen Arnold (4-3) picked up her second consecutive shutout in helping West Chester to a modest two-game win streak. Arnold made just two saves in the win.
Nicole Fiorilla opened up the scoring in the first half by finishing off a perfect feed from Kate Zunski across the front of the cage 10 minutes into the match.
In the second half, Nancy Stehman scored her first career goal off a pass from fellow freshman Caitlin Dempsey in the 48th minute. Alisha Moran notched her fourth goal of the year sweeping in a shot along the endline following a pass from Kelsi Lykens.
West Chester opened up passing lanes, swiftly moving down field and counter attacking quickly. It was play like that, which enabled the Golden Rams to dictate the pace of the contest.
Emma Ruth made eight saves in the cage for LaSalle.
West Chester returns home to Vonnie Gros Field on Sunday at noon for the annual Eleanor Snell Cup match against Ursinus.
