Mansfield Buzzer-Beater Sinks West Chester Men, 53-50

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Pa.
- Tony Fannick hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift host Mansfield to a 53-50 victory over visiting West Chester in a PSAC East men's basketball showdown inside Decker Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (15-10, 4-8 PSAC East) is eliminated from the PSAC playoff picture as a result of the loss while Mansfield (17-8, 8-4) moves into a three-way tie for first place with Cheyney and East Stroudsburg, following the Warriors' overtime victory at home against the Wolves.

Mansfield's Ryan Callahan missed a layup with 12 seconds left and the game tied at 50-all. However, Derrison Anthony grabbed the rebound and the Mountaineers called timeout. Head coach Rich Miller set up his play, and Fannick drained the game-winning shot off a pass from Chris Pender that broke the hearts of the West Chester faithful, who made the trip to northern part of the state.

West Chester led for most of the game, though the visitor's lead never was more than eight points at any time. Fannick's 3-pointer was Mansfield's first lead since a 7-6 advantage seven minutes into the first half. The Mountaineers trailed by six (47-41) with four minutes remaining when they went on a 9-3 run to even things up with 45 ticks left.

Ralph Hegamin led West Chester with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kehinde Roberts had nine points and Harley Williamson posted eight off the bench.

Anthony finished with 13 rebounds for Mansfield, but did not score a point. Carr registered a game-high 18 points and Pender had nine.

West Chester travels to Shippensburg on Wednesday for a PSAC East contest against the Raiders at 8 p.m. All the action can be heard on 91.7 WCUR-FM, or over the internet on Red Zone Media (www.redzonemedia.com).
