WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Ralph Hegamin scored a team-high 19 points and tied his career high with 19 rebounds, but it was not enough as host West Chester University lost to visiting Shippensburg University, 63-61, in a PSAC East men’s basketball contest Wednesday evening at Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (13-7, 2-5 PSAC East) held a lead the entire second half until Shippensburg’s Jordan Stasyszyn nailed a 3-pointer with 1:18 to play to put the Raiders up by one (61-60). Shippensburg (9-11, 2-5 PSAC East) never trailed by more than nine points in the second half, crawling to within one (57-56) with 2:47 to go, and tying the game at 58-apiece just under the two-minute mark.
Jaren Gembe hit one of two free throws, giving Shippensburg a two-point lead with 17 ticks remaining. However, West Chester misfired on its last three attempts from the field, and Eli Daniel made just one of two foul shots with 10 seconds left before fouling out with 10 points.
The Golden Rams took their largest lead of the game of nine points (45-36) midway through the second half. Hegamin sparked the rally with a jumper, and on the other end of the court, blocked a shot, which lead to a Kenneth St. George 3-pointer. In addition to Hegamin’s 19 points, St. George contributed 12 points.
Will Royal led Shippensburg with 13 points and was 7-for-8 from the foul line. Craig Van Scyoc contributed 12 points. Stasyszyn finished with 11 points.
The Golden Rams are back in action when they host Millersville at 3 p.m. on Saturday. It is Hall of Fame weekend at Hollinger Field House. West Chester University will induct six new members into its athletics hall of fame, along with the 1950 national champion men’s soccer squad, at halftime.
