WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Charlie Kelly threw out Anthony DiFrencesco at third base for the final out of the game as the 11th-ranked Golden Rams emerged a 5-3 winner over the Rams from Philadelphia University in the home opener for West Chester University Wednesday afternoon.
West Chester (11-3) received 6.2 solid innings from reliever Craig Carroll (2-0) after a rocky start. Philadelphia University lefty Kevin McGovern (1-1) tossed a complete game for the Rams, authoring one of his own marvelous efforts on a warm early spring afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
Phila U’s Rob Fisher stepped to the plate in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded, two men out and the visitors trailing, 5-2. West Chester brought in submarine-style righty Carmen Daddario to close things out. Fisher singled up the middle, plating Dan Hennigan.
Pinch-runner at second base, Mike DeLaney, rounded third and headed home, but Golden Rams’ center fielder Charlie Kelly came up firing and gunned down DiFrancesco at third base.
Carroll allowed three hits and one unearned run over 6.2 innings, walking one and striking out nine, to pick up his second win of the season.
Brandon Wolfe went 3-for-3 with a double and triple and two runs scored. Matt Baer hit a RBI ground out in the third and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Kelly went 2-for-4 with a RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases.
With the game tied at 2-2, West Chester scored two runs in the fourth and one more in the seventh to take a 5-2 advantage.
McGovern surrendered five runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out two. He kept West Chester’s hitters off balance in a very impressive performance for Philadelphia University.
West Chester opens its conference slate on Friday with a doubleheader at Millersville. First pitch of game one is 1 p.m.
