No. 8 West Chester Powers Past Bloomsburg In Doubleheader Sweep

BLOOMSBURG, Pa.
– Nick Spisak and Brandon Wolfe each went 6-for-8 in a doubleheader sweep over host Bloomsburg at Lithwhiler Field in the PSAC East baseball opener for both schools Friday afternoon.

West Chester (14-3, 2-0 PSAC East) downed Bloomsburg (4-14, 0-2) in the opener, 10-7, and came back in the nightcap for an 18-3 verdict. Freshman right-hander Fred Breidenbach (4-0) remained perfect on the mound with a win in game one. Left-handed senior Eric Carmichael (4-1) earned the win in the second game.

Spisak knocked in six runs and scored six runs on the strength of three home runs in the twinbill Friday afternoon. Wolfe knocked in three runs and scored five as well. He hit two solo shots in the opener.

Joe Wendle was a combined 5-for-9 with three runs scored.

Matt Baer hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning of game two, which put West Chester on the board initially and broke a scoreless tie. West Chester added four more in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Baer and a double steal in which Spisak scored. The senior then hit two home runs during an eight-run sixth, accounting for half of the runs batted in, to put the game out of reach after six, 15-2.

Bill Pace singled in a run and Baer doubled home another in the seventh as the Golden Rams scored three runs in their final at bat. The third run scored on a Bloomsburg error.

Carmichael pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six, picking up the win in game two. Dan Doyle finished up the final two innings, surrendering three hits, one run and striking out three.

Bloomsburg’s Vinny Voorhees (1-2) suffered the loss in game two. He yielded seven runs, four of them earned, on nine hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Breidenbach tossed four innings and gave up five runs, only one of them earned. He allowed six hits, walked five and struck out six. Chris Ott pitched two innings of relief, surrendering two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Jordan Lehman (1) pitched the seventh to pick up his first save of the season. He struck out three and yielded two hits.

Grant Kernaghan (0-3) took the loss for Bloomsburg in the opener. He pitched 6.2 innings and allowed nine runs on nine hits and struck out nine.

West Chester scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and turned things over to Lehman, who finished off the Huskies. Wolfe singled in one run and Baer stole home on the back end of a double steal.

West Chester and Bloomsburg finish up their four-game series on Saturday at Serpico Stadium. First pitch of game one is 1 p.m.
