WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Kyle Orensky hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the first game, and junior right-hander Dave Stieg threw a two-hitter in the nightcap as No. 8 West Chester University swept a PSAC East doubleheader from visiting Bloomsburg, 12-5 and 10-2 at sun-splashed Serpico Stadium on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon for baseball.
West Chester (16-3, 4-0 PSAC East) banged out 24 hits and scored 22 runs in the doubleheader sweep over Bloomsburg (4-16, 0-4) on the strength of six home runs. The Golden Rams smashed 12 homers in the four-game sweep and rapped out 52 hits altogether.
West Chester trailed Bloomsburg, 4-3 in game one entering the fifth inning when the Rams bats came alive. The hosts pushed across five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth – all with two outs. The nightcap was almost a mirror image as West Chester took a 2-0 advantage into the fifth inning and proceeded to put up consecutive four-spots in the fifth and sixth to salt away the tilt.
The Golden Rams scored 18 runs with two outs in the doubleheader.
Stieg (1-1) was masterful in the second game, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Joey Ianiero singled deep in the hole at short to break up the no-hitter. Rams shortstop Nick Spisak fielded the ball with a backhand and flung it over to first. But, there was no chance to get the Huskies’ leadoff hitter. Stieg allowed just a pair of infield singles, pitching a complete game for his first win of the season.
In the fifth inning of game two, Orensky started the onslaught with a two-run shot to left. After Brandon Wolfe popped out, Bob Stumpo and Matt Baer hit back-to-back home runs. Charlie Kelly stepped to the plate in the sixth inning and hit a two-run blast of his own to highlight that four-run frame.
Orensky finished the twinbill 4-for-7 with seven RBI, including his two home runs. Spisak was 1-for-2 in the first game with his fourth home run of the four-game series and team-leading sixth of the season. His home run in the opener was a 400-foot blast to center field. Spisak finished the four-game sweep over Bloomsburg 8-for-12 (.667) with four homers, nine RBI and nine runs scored.
Carmen Daddario (3-0) earned the win in relief in game one. He pitched 2.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits and striking out one. He did allow an inherited runner to score. Starter Jordan Lehman lasted 4.1 innings and gave up four runs, two of them earned, on five hits and struck out one.
West Chester continues its PSAC slate with a doubleheader at Millersville on Tuesday in a makeup of the rained out doubleheader March 12. The Golden Rams then return home Wednesday to face Lincoln in a non-league game at Serpico Stadium.
