Women’s Tennis Defeats Kutztown, 5-4

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa.
– West Chester’s women’s tennis squad showed its competitive side in a tightly fought contest at Kutztown on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Rams, who originally lost the match by a score of 5-4, had their protest upheld by the PSAC and were declared winners by that same score.

Kutztown switched the #4 and #5 players in its singles lineup, based in part on a “challenge match” played earlier in the week by the two players.  ITA rules prohibit the change of lineups based on “challenge matches” after the sixth dual match played on the schedule following January 1.  The “challenge match” occurred after the eighth match of the season and therefore was not permissible for a lineup adjustment according to ITA rules.

West Chester (11-3) saw its modest two-game win streak come to a close against Kutztown. Louise Souto, Claire Afrassiabian and Theresa Grasso won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively. Kara Shumock picked up the forfeited win at No. 5 singles as a result of the protest. Shumock and Souto falso teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles, 9-8.

The Golden Rams third doubles team of Allie Melhem and Grasso fell, 9-8.

West Chester heads home to play Millersville on Friday afternoon as the Golden Rams stand at 2-0 in conference play.
