WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The 17th-ranked Kutztown Golden Bears defeated fifth-ranked West Chester University in both ends of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader Sunday at sun-splashed Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (28-9, 14-6 PSAC East) could have put the regular-season race in the East to bed over the weekend. However, Kutztown (27-7, 11-5) jumped right back into the chase for first place by taking three out of four from the Rams. It marked the first time that West Chester had been swept at home in a doubleheader since the 2006 season opener against Bryant.
Freshman righty Fred Breidenbach (8-1) surrendered six runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work, suffering his first loss of the season. The Bears scored two runs in the second inning to knot the game at 2-2 and then added three more in the third to take the lead for good, 5-2.
West Chester plated a pair of runs in the fourth to draw within one. However, Kutztown pushed across single tallies in the sixth and seventh to widen its margin.
Kevin McGrath went 3-for-4 in the second game while Josh Heyne was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
In the opener, Kutztown scored five runs in the third inning to erase a 3-0 deficit, then scored three more in the fifth after West Chester had jumped back into the lead at 6-5. McGrath was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the first game. He went 5-for-6 combined in the doubleheader.
Joe Opalka (1-2) suffered the loss. He allowed two runs in one-plus innings of work.
