Women’s Tennis Falls At East Stroudsburg, 5-4; Playoff Fate Still In The Balance

Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.
– Rabecca Lausch defeated Teresa Grasso at sixth singles for the deciding point in the PSAC East women’s tennis match Tuesday afternoon that gave host East Stroudsburg a 5-4 victory over visiting West Chester.

East Stroudsburg (12-7, 3-2 PSAC East) and West Chester (12-6, 3-2) finish in a three-way tie for second place with Kutztown (5-7, 3-2) as the conference slate comes to a close.

The top three teams in the East qualify for the postseason tournament. Regular-season champion Bloomsburg (11-3, 5-0) is the top seed in the Eastern Division. After an exhausting tie-breaker formula could not separate the three tied teams, it will be up to the PSAC seeding committee to reach a verdict. The PSAC seeding committee will determine the other two playoff participants from the East.

West Chester will be looking to make its first postseason appearance since the PSAC went to its current team dual-match tournament format in 2004.

Grasso fell to Lausch by scores of 6-4, 6-4 at sixth singles in the deciding match. West Chester had taken a 2-1 lead in the match after the doubles competition was completed. However, East Stroudsburg battled back with wins at the top three singles positions.

West Chester picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles by Claire Afrassiabian and Kara Shumock, respectively, leaving it all up to the sixth singles slot.

Shumock was a double winner on the day, teaming up with Luisi Souto at No. 2 doubles for a victory.

West Chester takes on Georgian Court on Friday in its next match of the spring.
