MANSFIELD, Pa. – West Chester pounded out 29 hits in the nightcap of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader at Mansfield to earn a split of the twinbill at Shaute Field on a beautiful spring afternoon in Northeastern, Pa.
West Chester (24-5, 10-2 PSAC East) tightened its stranglehold on the rest of the Eastern Division with the split. Mansfield (15-9, 5-5) came from behind in the opener to come out of Friday’s doubleheader still at .500 in conference play and holding on to the second spot in the league standings.
Joe Wendle hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the top of the fifth inning of game one to give West Chester a 4-2 lead. However, Mansfield answered with two in its half of the fifth to tie the game off reliever Carmen Daddario (4-1) and added one more in the sixth to pick up the 5-4 verdict in the opener.
Golden Rams starter Eric Carmichael lasted four innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits before exiting in the fifth after facing one batter.
Matt Baer smashed his team-leading eighth homer of the year in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Wendle finished 3-for-4 while Kevin McGrath, Nick Spisak and Bob Stumpo each rapped out a pair of hits.
Chris Zelko (3-1) picked up the complete-game win in the opener. He allowed 13 hits, but the Golden Rams could only muster four runs off of it.
Stumpo highlighted a seven-run third in the nightcap with his first career grand slam while West Chester cruised to a 30-6 win. Josh Heyne also hit a two-run shot, the first of his college career, as the Golden Rams scored seven in the fourth as well to take a commanding 15-1 lead.
The Golden Rams hit four home runs in the game as Nick Spisak and Charlie Kelly also went yard in the second game.
Fred Breidenbach (7-0) went four innings to pick up his seventh win of the season. He gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out six. He has been supported with 54 runs in his last two outings. Craig Carroll tossed two innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Brandon Wolfe pitched the seventh.
West Chester returns home Saturday afternoon for another doubleheader versus Mansfield at Serpico Stadium. First pitch of game one is at 1 p.m.
