Kutztown Tops West Chester Tennis, 5-1

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University topped West Chester University in a PSAC Women’s Tennis quarterfinal round match at Keystone Courts Tuesday afternoon, 5-1.

West Chester (13-8) ends one of its most successful women’s tennis seasons in quite some time while Kutztown (10-9) advances to the PSAC semifinals on Friday at Bloomsburg University to face California (Pa.).

The Golden Rams’ second doubles tandem of Luisi Souto and Kara Shumock opened the match with a quick 8-0 win. However, Kutztown rallied back with five straight wins to clinch the match. Radminah Boorah defeated Souto, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to end the playoff match. Fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches were suspended once Kutztown clinched the win.

“I felt like our four through six were in command of their matches,” head coach Tina Tharp said. “We really needed one of our top singles to pull it out.”

West Chester University was making its first trip to the PSAC postseason tournament since the conference went to the current dual-match format in 2004.
