Baseball Splits With Shippensburg; Wins Eastern Division Title

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
- West Chester University's baseball team split a PSAC East doubleheader with Shippensburg at Serpico Stadium on Saturday, winning the opener, 11-2, before falling in the nightcap, 12-8.

However, the Golden Rams (35-10, 17-7 PSAC East) received some good news from Millersville where Kutztown was swept in a dobuleheader, handing West Chester the regular-season Eastern Division title for the second straight year. Shippensburg (13-36, 7-17) concludes its 2010 campaign with the split.

Matt Baer hit his 10th home run of the season in the first game, knocking in four runs, while Kyle Orensky and Bob Stumpo each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Stumpo picked up three RBI and Orensky knocked in a pair as well.

Dave Stieg (5-2) threw a complete-game in the opener, scattering seven hits and allowing only two runs. He walked two and struck out five.

West Chester plated four runs in the third and four more in the sixth to take command of the game.

Ted Williams (2-6) threw a complete-game in the loss. He surrendered 16 hits and 11 runs.

In the nightcap, Shippensburg scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 6-6 tie and held on for the win. Carmen Daddario (4-3) suffered the loss for West Chester, yielding five runs on four hits in two innings of relief.

West Chester will head to Johnstown, Pa., on Wednesday to open up the 2010 PSAC Baseball Tournament as the No. 1 seed out of the Eastern Division. They will take on Slippery Rock in its first tournament contest on a day and at a time to be determined Monday.
